1. a member of the dynasty of Muslim caliphs (A.D. 661-750) that preceded the Abbassids and had its seat at Damascus.
2. a member of a branch of this dynasty which founded the caliphate of Córdoba in Spain (A.D. 756). Also, Ommiad, Umayyad.
